Edition #2

Hey there,

And welcome back to The BJJ Insider, your premier source for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu news, analysis, and insights.

I'm Daniel Negru, a dedicated BJJ practitioner, coach and your guide through the fascinating world of grappling.

In this action-packed edition, we're breaking down the electrifying Polaris 29, recapping the ADCC Ireland Open, and diving into the age-old Gi vs No-Gi debate.

Let’s roll!

Polaris 29: A Night of Surprises and Submissions

Polaris 29 delivered an unforgettable show last Saturday in the UK. Here are the standout moments:

Fight of the Night: Davis Asare vs. George Pearson

This match had it all and was pure fireworks! Davis started off fast with some explosive movements trying to take George’s back from the get go. He threatened George with a variety of submission attempts until finally securing a clean back take. He continued to control George for 5 minutes before George reversed him the position. George then returned fire with a flurry of submissions leaving Davis to gritt out through some of the tightest submissions I’ve ever seen. Incredible back and forth! FIGHT OF THE NIGHT!

Dominant Performance: Tainan Dalpra vs. Tarik Hopstock

This matchup was very intriguing when it was first announced, however in reality, Tainan completely dominated it from start to finish. His excellent top passing was too much for Tarik and he also threatened him with his very own move, the ‘Tarikoplata’ once or twice. Ultimately he finished him with a kimura from north south, a great performance and result for the Brazilian.

Upset of the Night: Mohammed Avtarhanov vs. Jay Rodriguez

Finally we have one of the biggest upsets in Pro BJJ. A great clash between Mohammed and Jay that led to Mohammed edging the close decision. Through his calmness under pressure Mohammed executed some great sweeps and rear body lock controls through the first 7 minutes. Jay Rod however bounced back by getting a smooth back take and putting Mohammed in some seriously deep waters. Ultimately Mohammed had done enough and shocked the world by beating the ADCC world silver medalist but I can definitely see the rematch between the two happening.

The Great Debate: No-Gi vs Gi BJJ

One of the biggest debates in the BJJ community centers around whether competitive No-Gi is better or more entertaining than Gi BJJ. Let's dive deep into this topic, exploring the pros and cons of each style.

The Case for No-Gi

  1. Dynamic Exchanges:

    • No cloth grips means less stalling

    • Encourages more scrambles and faster-paced action

    • Often leads to more exciting spectator experience

  2. Wider Submission Range:

    • Allows for heel hooks, twisters, and neck cranks

    • Creates more submission opportunities and variety

    • Can lead to faster finishes and highlight-reel moments

  3. Closer to MMA and Self-Defense:

    • No reliance on clothing grips

    • More applicable to real-world scenarios

    • Easier transition for wrestlers and MMA fighters

  4. Emphasis on Body Control:

    • Requires more precise pressure and positioning

    • Develops strong under hooks and body locks

    • Improves overall athleticism and explosiveness

The Case for Gi

  1. Technical Depth:

    • Gi grips add layers of complexity to techniques

    • Encourages a more methodical, chess-like approach

    • Develops fine motor skills and grip strength

  2. Traditional Aspects:

    • Connects practitioners to BJJ's roots

    • Emphasizes discipline and respect (belt system)

    • Gi maintenance teaches responsibility

  3. Pace Control:

    • Allows for more control over match tempo

    • Develops patience and strategic thinking

    • Can be less physically taxing, suitable for all ages

  4. Diverse Techniques:

    • Unique chokes and setups using the Gi

    • Teaches use of friction and cloth manipulation

    • Translatable skills to self-defense situations involving clothing

Finding Common Ground

While the debate continues, it's important to recognize the value in both styles:

  1. Cross-Training Benefits:

    • No-Gi can improve Gi speed and explosiveness

    • Gi can enhance No-Gi control and precision

  2. Personal Preference:

    • Some practitioners naturally gravitate towards one style

    • Both offer unique challenges and rewards

  3. Competition Opportunities:

    • Training both styles opens up more tournament options

    • Versatility can be a significant advantage

  4. Holistic Skill Development:

    • Exposure to both styles creates well-rounded grapplers

    • Each style compensates for potential weaknesses in the other

My Take

In my opinion, while No-Gi offers certain advantages in terms of entertainment value, particularly for newcomers to the sport, both styles have their merits. No-Gi's faster pace and broader submission options make it immediately exciting, but Gi BJJ's technical depth offers a different kind of thrill, especially for those who appreciate the nuances of the sport.

Ultimately, the beauty of BJJ lies in its diversity. Whether you prefer the grip battles of Gi or the scrambles of No-Gi, the most important thing is that you're on the mats, continuously learning and growing in this amazing martial art.

From where I stand - the best style is the one that keeps you motivated to train consistently.
