BJJ: The Secret Weapon in MMA Success
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been a cornerstone of Mixed Martial Arts since its inception, propelling countless fighters to championship status. Here's how you can leverage BJJ for MMA dominance:
1. Adapt Your BJJ for MMA Control
Traditional BJJ doesn't always translate directly to the cage. Here's what to focus on:
Traditional open guard passing not as necessary, with the edition of strikes you can create more reactions that ultimately lead to positions of control.
Utilising top pressure from half guard, side control and mount through heavy crossface, pinching of the knees and heavy hips.
Become a "wet blanket".
Shut down opponent movement.
Bide your time for the perfect opening.
2. Diversify Your Submission Arsenal
A wide range of submission attacks gives you options from any position:
Turn the tide of a losing fight
Threaten finishes from unexpected positions
Keep opponents guessing and defensive
BJJ can be your ultimate "get out of jail free" card in MMA. It's saved countless fighters from certain defeat and will continue to do so.
Technique of the Week: The Tarikoplata π
This week, Iβm spotlighting a unique and devastating submission: the Tarikoplata.
What is the Tarikoplata?
Invented by Norwegian BJJ superstar Tarik Hopstock in the mid-2010s
Targets the opponent's shoulder, forearm, and bicep simultaneously
Requires excellent timing and execution
Tarikoplata Breakdown:
Start from top north-south kimura position
Opponent is defending their arm
Swing your opposite leg over the defending arm
Keep your same-side arm through, trapping the shoulder
Create leverage by ripping the arm and driving your leg/hip up
Why It's Effective:
Uncommon technique, often catching opponents off-guard
Creates intense pressure on multiple joints
Can be a game-changer in both BJJ and MMA contexts
Training Tips:
Practice the entry from various positions
Focus on timing and smooth transitions
Start with light pressure and increase gradually to understand the mechanics
Give the Tarikoplata a try in your next rolling session and let us know how it works for you!
